Shibori en Paris Nov 08

Ich war in Paris. 
I was in Paris (and since it will be a longer entry, I will scatter the english text in between *g*)



Jedes Jahr findet an einem anderen Ort der Welt das International Shibori Symposium statt und dieses Jahr war es in Frankreich. Die Veranstaltungsorte verteilten sich auf Paris, Lyon und Marseilles und seien wir ehrlich, ich diletiere in Shibori und muss dafür nicht auf ein solches Symposium, aber die Ausstellungen in Paris haben mich nun doch interessiert. Über die Online Guild erkundigte sich F aus Frankreich, wer denn Lust darauf hätte mit nach Paris zu kommen - und nach einigem Überlegen und Planen, sagte ich zu. Mit dieser Entscheidung hatte ich unglaublich viel Glück, denn F hat Freunde in Paris, bei denen wir übernachten konnten. Und außerdem kennt sie sich in Paris aus und konnte mich so wunderbar führen. Zusammen mit einem Europa Städteticket von der DB war der ganze Ausflug also finanziell sehr erträglich. Ich habe mehr im Museumsladen des Musée du quai Branly ausgegeben ;o)

Each year there is the International Shibori Symposium at another place in the world. This year it is (was) in France. I am not nearly good enough to take part in the actual symposium but I loved to see some of the exhibitions around the symposium. And when a friend from the Online Guild asked, if someone wanted to tag along, I was all for it (after some time of consideration and planning, of course *g* no one ever accused me of being spontaneous *g*). And with the european city ticket from the Deutsche Bahn, it was even affordable. More so, since this friend has other friends in Paris where we could stay. It was wonderful. And I would like to thank all those nice people there again for their kindness and hospitality.

Die Ausstellungen waren auf verschiedene Orte in Paris verteilt und natürlich konnten wir uns zwischen Freitag und Sonntag nicht alle Ausstellungen ansehen. Wir waren (in Reihenfolge):

The exhibitions mainly took place in different galleries all scattered through Paris, and between friday and sunday, there was not nearly enough time to see them all. But we were able to see the following:

- in der Paris American Academy um uns Australia Naturally anzusehen.
Die Ausstellung zeigt kleine Objekte in der Größe 30x30 cm verschiedener australischer Shibori-Künsterlinnen. Der Kurator war so freundlich uns auch nach den Öffnungszeiten noch reinzulassen und ich durfte sogar Fotos machen, die ich hier aber nicht veröffentlichen werde.

- In the Paris American Academy we could see 'Australia Naturally' an exhibition of several smaller objects all 30x30 cm large. The curator of the exhibition was very nice and let us in even after hours. We were really lucky that way. I was aloud to take pictures but I won't publish them for copyright reasons.

- bei Lumière dans l'Ombre gab es wunderbare Objekte in einem schönen Ambiente zu sehen. Alte Spinnerin, die ich bin, sah ich natürlich eine Kette mit über 20 Spinnwirteln aus Mali als erstes. Nachdem ich meine Freunde ausgedrückt hatte, bat ich die Galleriebesitzerin um Erlaubnis, die Wirtel fotografieren zu dürfen und es entspann sich eine Diskussion darüber, ob es Wirtel sind oder prayer beads. Sie hatte die Kette nämlich als prayer beads verkauft bekommen (Spinnwirtel sind anscheinend zu profan *g*), ich konnte ihr aber versichern, dass es Wirtel seien und erklärte auch kurz, was man damit macht.

- Lumière dans l'Ombre presented the wonderful works of Marie-Hélène Guelton, Trine Mauritz.Eriksen and Pietro Seminelli in a wonderful ambiance, though one of the first things my old spinner's eye saw, was a whole collection of spinning whorls from Mali (Côte d'Ivoire was also possible, though it was later revealed they were indeed at least bought in Mali). When I asked the owner, if I may take a foto of the spinning whorls, she told me they were prayer beads. I assured her, that they were indeed spinning whorls for spinning cotton on a supported spindle. I guess, spinning whorls are too profane to sell ;o) But the whole experience was really nice.

The shibori works were beautiful and well lit, which was not really standard. I am sure, there is a possibility to use some high tech illumination that will conserve the textiles and the colours.

- als nächstes waren wir dann in einem  l'Eclaireur-Laden und zwar dem Cabinet de Curiosite in der Rue Herold. Inzwischen weiß ich, dass l'Eclaireur eine so genannte high-end Boutique ist (wobei high-end den Preis meint, ich weiß immer noch nicht, warum ich für einen noch so schönen Mantel 12 000 EUR zahlen sollte, selbst wenn ich es hätte - und nein, ich hab mich nicht in den Stellen vertan). Jedenfalls wurden wir unter größeren Mühen in diesen Tempel eingelassen und man zeigte uns - nachdem wir instruiert wurden, was wir alles tun und vor allen Dingen lassen sollten - auch die Ausstellung 'Sculptured Packages', bei der es u.a. auch ein Objekt von India Flint, der Autorin von 'Eco Colours' geben sollte. Mit etwas Suchen fanden wir es auch, leider war der Raum ein bisschen schlecht ausgeleuchtet (künstlerische Dunkelheit) und das Objekt, ein Tuch mit leaf print, war an einer Säule drapiert, so dass man eigentlich vom Print nichts sah. Auch nicht von den Farben. Nunja, mir tat es sehr leid um die Objekte und man müsste den Künstlern eigentlich mal schreiben, wie ihre Kunst gezeigt wurde.

- next stop was a l'Eclaireur shop. I did some research and now I know that it is one of several high-end boutiques in Paris and Tokyo. (High-end meaning the price. I don't see any reason to pay 12 000 EUR for a coat, even if I had the money - and no, I didn't mess up the digits) It took some time to get entrance into that temple of art and after we endured the dos and especially the don'ts, we were admited to 'Sculptured Packages'. In this artfully dark room, it was not really possible to see any details and only after consulting the list of contributors, my friend and I realized that there - supposedly - was an object by India Flint. After some searching we actually found it draped at a column. Which was very unfortunate, since that way, we couldn't really see the leaf prints, India Flint is so famous for. But it was great, nevertheless, to see one of her works up close. (BTW, India Flint is the author of  'Eco Colours', a book (and person) I really admire)

- als Letztes sahen wir uns dann die beiden großen Ausstellungen im Musée du quai Branly. Die Hauptausstellung zum Symposium ist Chemins de couleurs und besteht aus einer sehr schön gezeigten Sammlung historischer Shiboritextilien aus der ganzen Welt. Natürlich sind wir Textilfanatiker nicht an irgendwelchen Interpretationen interessiert oder wie symbolisch jenes oder welches nun ist, sondern uns hätten mehr die Technik und eine nähere Beschreibung der Technik und der Materialien interessiert, aber man kann ja nicht alles haben. Ich habe mir zumindest das Buch zur Ausstellung (hardcover Katalog mit vielen Texten und Beschreibungen) gekauft, in der Hoffnung dort einige nähere Informationen zu finden. Falls nicht, habe ich immer noch die wunderbaren Bilder.

Und unten gab es die reguläre Ausstellung zu Artefakten verschiedener Kontinente. Und von oben sah ich plötzlich ein Chilikat-Behang. (Ein Bild von einem solchen Behang/Decke kann man zB hier bei First people sehen) Ich hatte schon einiges darüber gelesen und nachdem mich so genannte primitive Webtechniken besonders interessieren, stürzte ich mich natürlich darauf wie der Teufel auf die arme Seel. Der Behang selbst ist nicht besonders dokumentiert, aber ich konnte sehen, dass für die Kette ein Baumbast zweifach gezwirnt als Seele benutzt wurde, der dann mit einer Art wrap-and-roll-Technik mit Ziegenhaargarn umwickelt war. Der Schuss scheint etwas fester gesponnen und gezwirnter Ziegenhaarfaden zu sein. Eigentlich ist die Technik, die hierbei benutzt wird kein Weben, sondern twining, was aus dem tapestry weaving kommt. Details. Jedenfalls haben sie unten in der ständigen Ausstellung unglaublich viele, schöne Textilien, so dass wir es kaum rechtzeitig schafften aus dem Museum rauszukommen, da wir uns ja noch im Museumsshop eindecken wollten. Was wir dann auch gemacht haben ;o) Der Katalog zur Ausstellung heißt: Chemins de couleurs - teintures et motifs du monde. ISBN 978-2-915133-92-9, Die Sprache ist Französisch und es kostet 39 EUR.

- last but not least, the big exhibition on historical shibori in the Musée du quai Branly. I really love that museum. Even if they tend to present their textiles in rather shady lighting (to preserve the colours) and they don't really have any idea of the techniques involved (which is what really interests me, not all the artsy interpretations about colours and such). There are lots more objects downstairs in the regular exhibition and from up I spotted a chilikat weaving, something I was always dying to see in real life. (You can see a foto of a chilikat blanket here at  First people) It was great to see it up close. They seem to have used 2 plied bast fibres as core and used some kind of wrap-and-roll-technique in softly spun goat's hair as warp and some stronger spun and plied goat's hair as weft. The weaving is called twining and is used in tapestry weving. Anyways, they have so many wonderful textiles in their regular exhibition that we nearly didn't manage to get to the museum's shop ;o) The catalogue of the shibori exhibition is called: Chemins de couleurs - teintures et motifs du monde. ISBN 978-2-915133-92-9, language french  it costs 39 EUR.

Super Erlebnisse, super Reise, also da wäre ich auch gerne dabei gewesen, hätte ich davon gewußt, aber vielleicht nächstes Mal
